Fredericksburg Court Docket Records
Fredericksburg court docket records are maintained by the Circuit Court Clerk and the General District Court for the 15th Judicial Circuit. Fredericksburg is an independent city on the Rappahannock River, located between Richmond and Washington, D.C., and it runs its own court system separate from any county. You can search court dockets online through Virginia's public case search tools or visit the courthouse in person to pull filings, orders, and docket history. This page covers both courts, how to find records, how to request copies, and what fees apply under Virginia law.

Juvenile and Domestic Relations (JDR) Court cases are not publicly searchable. JDR records in Virginia are confidential under state law. If you need JDR records, contact that court directly to ask about the process for authorized access.

Search Fredericksburg Court Dockets
Fredericksburg court dockets can be searched online or in person at the courthouse. Online tools are free and available around the clock. In-person searches let you review physical files and ask for copies on the spot. Most people start online and then go to the courthouse if they need a certified copy or want to see documents not available through the digital system.
For circuit court cases, use the Circuit Court Case Information System (CJIS). Search by first and last name or case number. The system returns filed documents, hearing dates, parties, and case status. It does not always include full text of orders, but it gives you the docket sheet with enough detail to know what is in the file. Most civil, criminal, and probate cases go back at least 10 years.
For General District Court cases, use the GD Court online search. Pick Fredericksburg from the court list and enter a name or case number. This covers misdemeanors, traffic infractions, and small civil claims.
To search in person, go to the clerk's office at 815 Princess Anne Street. Bring a photo ID. The clerk can pull case files for you to review at the counter. You can request copies there. Standard copies cost $0.50 per page and certified copies cost $2.00 per document under Code of Virginia section 17.1-275.
Fredericksburg Court Record Fees

Civil filing fees in Virginia depend on the amount at stake. Cases under $50,000 have a filing fee of $100. Cases from $50,000 to $100,000 cost $200 to file. Cases from $100,000 to $500,000 cost $250. Cases over $500,000 cost $300. These fees are set statewide under Title 17.1 of the Code of Virginia and apply in Fredericksburg just as they do anywhere else in the state.
Online records access through the state case search systems is free. You do not need to register or pay to search dockets or view case summaries. If you prefer to pay for copies remotely, Virginia offers the Virginia Judiciary Online Payment System (VJOPS) for certain fee types.

Civil Cases in Fredericksburg
The Fredericksburg Circuit Court hears civil cases over $4,500. The General District Court handles civil claims up to $25,000. Cases involving amounts between $4,500 and $25,000 can go to either court, though most smaller claims go to General District Court because the process is faster and less formal.
Civil cases in Fredericksburg follow procedural rules under Title 8.01 of the Code of Virginia. That title covers the rules for starting actions, serving process, conducting discovery, and entering judgment. When you file a civil case, the clerk assigns a case number and opens a file. Every document filed after that point becomes part of the docket. Parties, attorneys, and members of the public can review the docket using the online case search tools described above. Some documents may be sealed by court order, but the docket itself is generally public.
Fredericksburg residents who need help finding older court records can contact the Library of Virginia, which maintains archived court records and can point you toward resources for cases that are not available in the online systems.
Note: Because Fredericksburg is an independent city, it is not part of Stafford County or Spotsylvania County even though the 15th Circuit covers all three. Fredericksburg city cases are filed with the Fredericksburg clerk, not a county clerk.
