Finding Hopewell Court Records
You can find Hopewell court records online or at the courthouse. The online tools are fast and free. They give you enough information to confirm that a case exists and to get the case number you need for an in-person request. Going in person is necessary if you want copies of the actual documents.
For circuit-level cases, start with the Circuit Court Case Information System. For misdemeanor and traffic matters, use the GD Court search. In both tools, searching by full last name will return all matches for that name. Use case type filters and filing year to narrow the results if many names come up. Write down the case number from the results before you visit the clerk's office. It makes the request faster.
Public inspection rights are established by Code of Virginia section 17.1-208. You can look at court records in person during normal business hours at no charge. Copies are a different matter. Under section 17.1-275, plain paper copies cost $0.50 per page. Certified copies cost $2.00 per document. Bring a photo ID when you visit the courthouse.
Older Hopewell court records that predate the digital systems are held at the Library of Virginia. If you are researching historical cases from many years back, the Library of Virginia should be your starting point. They maintain order books and other records from circuit courts across the state.
Note: Hopewell is in the same 12th Circuit as Petersburg and Colonial Heights. If you are unsure which city has the case, run searches on all three before making a visit.
